About County Down

County Down is one of the six counties that form Northern Ireland. Burr Point in County Down is at the most easterly point of mainland Ireland. St Patrick is reportedly buried in Down cathedral, Downpatrick. The Mourne Mountains are rugged and spectacular with Slieve Donard the highest peak in Northern Ireland. Newry is the only full city with small part of Belfast and Lisburn in County Down. Portaferry is home to the Northern Ireland aquarium, Exploris, and lies on the shores of a marine nature reserve at Strangford Lough.
